Partnership in Action: Congratulations to RYLA Ukraine!

Successful Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference

Picking up the work of Rotarian and RPCV Andrew Lenec, Shannon Carter, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine, worked closely with Rotary District 2232 Governor Mykola Stebljanko to organize and host the first-ever Ukraine RYLA Conference July 25 - 27. Over 20 youth from around the world joined together in Lviv, Ukraine to learn new skills and positively collaborate. Learn more about the background of RYLA Ukraine as told by Andrew himself.

Behind-the-Scenes:
The Founding of Partnering for Peace

by Steve Werner

About ten years ago, a few of us Rotarians gathered at the Rotary District 5450 Annual Conference and since we were all RPCVs naturally, we were meeting next to the bar during the reception hour. We had a fairly large group and that is when we realized that Peace Corps and Rotary had a lot in common (besides gathering at the bar) … [We] continued to meet at Chairperson Sue Fox’s home and we developed a strategy that eventually led to a formal MOU and partnership between Peace Corps and Rotary.... In order to promote the partnership, we decided to create an affiliate group under the National Peace Corps Association, hence the creation of Partnering for Peace: Friends of Peace Corps and Rotary. We invite you to become a member if you haven’t already and we invite you to promote the partnership by joining (or creating!) a P4P committee in your Rotary District.

Board Member Spotlight

Did you know there is a team of volunteers pushing the work of Partnering for Peace forward? This month, our board member spotlight is Carin Paupore, Communications Committee Chair!

What is one of the most funny international moments you have had?

Probably the time in Paraguay when I told my host family "estoy embarazada" thinking it meant "I'm embarrassed." It actually means "I'm pregnant." Needless to say, they were quite shocked and I then I really was embarrassed!

What international work have you been a part of that you feel the most proud of?

This is very grassroots. During my Peace Corps service I worked with the local health clinic to put on a multi-part health series that included a parasite prevention education event with women. I prepared, practiced and presented in as much Guarani language as I could. It was a moment when I really connected with the community and showed the power of cultural adaptation.
