SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERS

 ELLEN GOBLIRSCH YOUNG

Our Partnering for Peace Board comes in all shapes and sizes.  This month we highlight a PC Mom who carries the passion of Peace Corps as much as her daughter. See full article here.

Ellen Young, a board member of Partnering for Peace, graduated from Smith College with a BA in Economics and Political Science, focusing on International Studies, and an MBA from the University of Chicago Business School, focusing on Finance. She received a taste of travel with the Smith-Princeton Chamber Chorus during the summer of 1971, performing in 6 Latin-American Countries.

For 33 years, Ellen pursued a career in commercial banking at several large banking institutions in the Chicago area and overseas.  She has also served in leadership positions on numerous community Boards.  Ellen joined Rotary in 1991, and has served in leadership positions at the club, district, and regional levels.  She is currently the ARRFC (Assistant Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator) for three districts in Northern Illinois.  Ellen is also the founder and President of the Northeast Chicagoland Passport Club.  In addition to her focus on Foundation Grants, Ellen served on the district’s End Polio Now Committee.

Ellen’s daughter, Sarah, served as a US Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic in 2007-2008. During her service, Sarah identified a need in her assigned village for books for young new readers. Ellen’s Rotary Club funded a library in Sarah’s village, which eventually grew to several computer lab projects in other villages, funded by a joint Rotary global grant with a district in Korea.  This project was featured in the Spring, 2023 issue of World Magazine. So we are proud to embrace Ellen into Partnering for Peace; although not a PCV she is passionately in the PC family

A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ellen and her English husband Chris live in Lake Forest, Illinois.  They have three grown children, Catherine, Sarah and Jonathan, and four grandchildren.
